Finding Your Fit in the CleanSpec Lab Store

The CleanSpec Lab Store Guide

What our five categories mean, why they overlap, and how to find a computer that fits your work.

Someone shopping for a family computer, a home-office desktop, or a CAD workstation may find useful options in more than one part of our store. That overlap is intentional. A computer’s original product family, its installed hardware, its condition, and its documented testing all contribute to where it fits.

Our categories help narrow the search. The individual listing provides the specifications, condition, included equipment, and validation scope you should use to make the final choice. Inventory changes, so examples in this guide illustrate the kinds of systems we work with rather than promise availability.

The five store categories

Bronze Certified Workstations

This is the place to look for workstations presented with documented OCCT testing. Read the validation wording and certificate for the exact system. The full OCCT Bronze System designation covers the complete profile, including CPU, memory, and 3D Adaptive graphics testing. A system identified as CPU + MEMORY TESTED has that narrower scope and does not carry the full Bronze System certificate or badge.

Bronze describes a testing result, not a processor family or a performance ranking. A workstation using an Intel® Core™ processor can be eligible; an Intel® Xeon® processor alone does not establish certification. Match the hardware to your applications, then use the documented testing to understand how that configuration was evaluated. [1–2]

Professional Workstations

Workstation platforms such as HP Z2 and Dell™ Precision™ systems can be useful for technical productivity, development, creative projects, and CAD when the installed configuration meets the application’s needs. This category helps you find that type of platform without treating the category itself as a full Bronze certification claim.

A workstation with a suitable processor, memory, and graphics configuration can also make a capable everyday desktop. Professional use and everyday use overlap; the difference is which capabilities matter to the buyer.

General Use PCs

This category is central to what we offer. Think family computers, schoolwork, email, online banking, spreadsheets, office applications, streaming, and small-business administration. It can include consumer families such as Dell™ Inspiron™ and HP ENVY, alongside business desktops such as Dell™ OptiPlex™, HP ProDesk, and HP EliteDesk.

General use describes the job a computer is suited to, not a lesser standard of care. A well-matched refurbished desktop with enough memory and a healthy SSD can be a satisfying everyday machine. Specific models may also support more demanding hobbies or office workloads; check their actual hardware before drawing the boundary.

CleanSpec Outlet

Outlet gives buyers another route to an accessible purchase price when they are comfortable with the particular condition or exception disclosed in a listing. The reason matters more than the label: read the description, photographs, testing notes, and any stated limitations.

One example is storage that falls below our standard drive-health threshold and is offered with its actual health clearly disclosed. That does not mean every Outlet computer has this exception. Nor does Outlet establish a particular age, processor speed, or remaining service life. Compare the individual computer with the work you expect it to do. [3]

Cooling Solutions

Our cooling products extend the store beyond complete computers. CleanSpec Lab designs rear cooling kits for supported HP Z2 small-form-factor workstation configurations, combining a mounting solution with the specified fan.

Compatibility is specific. Check the workstation generation, kit revision, and CPU-cooler arrangement in the product listing. A kit designed for one supported configuration should not be assumed to fit every Z2 system, and owning a workstation does not automatically mean you need an additional fan. Our cooling articles explain the development and testing behind the products. [4]

Why the categories overlap

They describe different aspects of a purchase. “Professional Workstations” points toward the platform and intended applications. “General Use PCs” points toward everyday workloads. “Bronze” adds a specific validation claim. “Outlet” draws attention to the listing’s disclosed condition or exception. “Cooling Solutions” identifies accessories with defined compatibility.

That means two HP Z2 systems can appear in different categories because their configurations or validation scope differ. An OptiPlex can be a strong General Use PC even though it began as a business desktop. A workstation offered through Outlet still needs to be evaluated as that particular machine, with its particular disclosures.

Overlap is about suitability. It does not mean every listing appears in every relevant category, or that two computers with similar cases perform the same way.

Start with the work you want to do

Your planned useA useful starting pointWhat deserves attention
Browsing, email, household administration, and streamingGeneral Use PCs; Outlet when its disclosures fit your needs.Suitable processor, enough memory, healthy SSD, supported software, and the right connections.
Home office, bookkeeping, schoolwork, and several applications at onceGeneral Use PCs or a well-priced workstation.Memory capacity, storage space, monitor support, and comfortable headroom for your normal multitasking.
CAD, photo work, development, or virtual machinesProfessional Workstations and Bronze Certified Workstations. The exact application requirements, project size, CPU, GPU, memory, and documented testing scope.
An upgrade to a supported HP Z2 cooling configurationCooling Solutions.Exact system model, kit version, cooler arrangement, and installation instructions.

These are starting points for comparison. Software requirements and the individual configuration determine suitability.

Buying more capability can still be good value

You do not need a workstation with an Intel Xeon W-1250 processor just to check email or browse social media. Those tasks can be served well by an appropriately configured everyday PC.

But there is also nothing wrong with choosing the workstation. If the price difference is modest, its memory, graphics, or expansion options may make it the better value for you. Perhaps you want to learn CAD, edit larger photos, run a virtual machine, or simply have more room for simultaneous applications. A purchase can support both today’s needs and a realistic next step.

More capability is most useful when you can connect it to a benefit. Check physical upgrade limits and software support as well as performance, and remember that a higher original product tier does not automatically make an older system faster than a newer everyday desktop.

Tell us what you plan to use

If you are choosing between listings, send us the links, the applications you use, your monitor setup, and any upgrades you have in mind. We can help compare the actual configurations and explain which differences are likely to matter.
