What began as a solution to a thermal-management problem encountered while refurbishing an HP Z2 G5 SFF workstation has grown into a small but expanding CleanSpec Lab cooling program. The original CSL-001 proved that a purpose-built rear chassis cooling system could restore airflow to Z2 G5 SFF configurations missing the appropriate factory rear fan assembly. That work led to CSL-002 for the HP Z2 G4 SFF, multiple rounds of prototyping and real-world testing, and ultimately a return to the original G5 platform with a redesigned CSL-001 V2.

Today, CleanSpec Lab is officially introducing the current generation of cooling solutions for the HP Z2 G4 and G5 SFF platforms: CSL-001 V1 RevC for the HP Z2 G5 SFF, CSL-002 RevC for the HP Z2 G4 SFF, and CSL-001 V2 RevC for the HP Z2 G5 SFF with the factory 80W CPU cooler configuration. All three represent the same development philosophy that started with the original CSL-001: identify a real hardware problem, design around the actual workstation, physically test the solution, validate its performance, and continue refining the design as new configurations and constraints are encountered.

CSL-001 — Refining the Original Design

For CSL-001, development from the original prototype to the current V1 RevC focused on refining a design that had already demonstrated its ability to restore rear chassis airflow on the HP Z2 G5 SFF. Rather than changing the fundamental concept, successive revisions refined the physical design and manufacturing process. Fillets and chamfers were incorporated where appropriate, geometry was cleaned up, and mounting and assembly features were revised to improve print consistency, fit, and repeatability. These changes preserve the purpose and workstation-specific fitment of the original CSL-001 while creating a more refined and consistently manufactured product.

CSL-002 — Expanding the Platform

Development of CSL-002 RevC provided an opportunity to apply lessons learned from the original CSL-001 while designing specifically around the different geometry of the HP Z2 G4 SFF. The current revision incorporates refined geometry, including fillets and chamfers where appropriate, along with an exhaust opening shaped to more closely align with the Z2 G4 SFF rear chassis grate. Manufacturing was also refined by incorporating previously drilled mounting features directly into the printed design, providing more consistent hole placement and more repeatable assembly from part to part.

CSL-001 V2 — Designing Around a New Constraint

CSL-001 V2 RevC represents a more fundamental evolution of the original G5 design. Continued work with the HP Z2 G5 SFF identified a physical limitation of CSL-001 V1: its mounting depth was not compatible with the larger factory 80W CPU cooler configuration. V2 was therefore redesigned around a reduced-depth mounting assembly specifically to provide the necessary cooler clearance while retaining the purpose-built rear cooling concept of the original CSL-001. The design was prototyped and physically fit-tested on actual Z2 G5 SFF hardware, with the current RevC incorporating the same emphasis on refined geometry, repeatable manufacturing, and consistent assembly developed throughout the CleanSpec Lab cooling program.
