CleanSpec Lab Cooling Solutions

Purpose-built cooling solutions developed and validated on real workstation hardware.

CleanSpec Lab Cooling Solutions are developed to solve real-world thermal and airflow challenges identified through our refurbishment and testing work. Each solution is designed, prototyped, physically fit-tested, and validated using the actual workstation platforms it was created to support. The result is purpose-built hardware engineered around real systems—not generic, one-size-fits-all accessories.

The CleanSpec Lab CSL-001 began with a problem identified during refurbishment and thermal testing of the HP Z2 G5 SFF workstation. Higher-performance configurations can generate substantial heat inside the compact chassis, making effective rear exhaust airflow an important part of the system’s thermal management.

CSL-001 was developed as a purpose-built rear cooling solution for Z2 G5 SFF systems where the appropriate factory rear fan assembly was absent. What began as a solution for our own refurbished workstations evolved through design, prototyping, physical fitment testing, and sustained system stress testing on actual Z2 G5 SFF hardware.

The result was CleanSpec Lab’s first cooling product: a complete rear chassis cooling kit designed specifically around the workstation it serves, rather than a generic fan or universal mounting solution.

Following the development of CSL-001 for the Z2 G5 SFF, CSL-002 brought the same purpose-built approach to the HP Z2 G4 SFF workstation. Although the G4 and G5 share a similar compact workstation platform, differences in chassis and CPU cooler geometry meant the original solution could not simply be carried over. CSL-002 was designed specifically around the G4, with particular attention to fitment alongside the factory 65W and mid-range CPU cooler configurations.

Development continued through multiple revisions as the design was refined for fitment, airflow, manufacturability, and consistency. Physical testing on actual Z2 G4 SFF hardware ultimately led to the current RevC design, incorporating improvements learned through continued prototyping and real-world use. Like CSL-001, CSL-002 is a complete rear chassis cooling kit developed around the workstation it serves—not a universal fan bracket adapted to fit.

As the CleanSpec Lab cooling program evolved, continued work with the HP Z2 G5 SFF revealed an opportunity to improve the original CSL-001. The first design successfully restored rear chassis airflow, but its mounting depth limited compatibility with larger factory CPU cooler configurations. CSL-001 V2 returned to the original platform with a redesigned, reduced-depth mounting assembly developed specifically to provide clearance for the factory 80W CPU cooler configuration.

Rather than simply modifying the original part, V2 was redesigned, prototyped, physically fit-tested, and validated on actual Z2 G5 SFF workstation hardware. The current RevC design represents the continued refinement of the product that started the CleanSpec Lab cooling program—preserving the purpose of the original CSL-001 while expanding its compatibility and incorporating lessons learned through the development of both CSL-001 and CSL-002.

CSL-001 V2 demonstrates the philosophy behind the cooling program: identify a real hardware problem, develop a solution, validate it, and continue improving the design as new configurations and constraints are encountered.
